Getting started

Maison overview

Who the theme is for, what it can do, and the principles behind its settings.

On this page

Maison is a Shopify Online Store 2.0 theme designed for brands that sell a tight edit — fashion, accessories, home — and would rather show a few products well than many products fast. The store stays calm where people shop and turns expressive where the brand tells its story.

You build your pages in the theme editor from sections and blocks, without writing code. Your customers get a fast, accessible journey from discovery to checkout, on phones and desktops alike.

What the theme offers

For building your pages

For selling

  • Filterable collections with Search & Discovery filters, sorting, and three filter layouts (drawer, toolbar, sidebar). Pagination with page numbers, a "Load more" button, or infinite scroll.
  • Predictive search in a sheet that opens from the header, with suggestions, recent searches, and a featured collection before the shopper even starts typing.
  • Cart drawer or cart page, with an order note, quantity rules, and accelerated checkout buttons on the cart page.
  • Quick add from product cards in grids.
  • Color swatches from Shopify's product options, on the product page and in grids.
  • Recommendations for related and complementary products.
  • Gift cards that can be sent to a recipient on a scheduled date.
  • Support for Shop Pay Installments, local pickup, and subscriptions (selling plans).

For international selling

The theme ships in English and French, for both the storefront and the editor. It supports Shopify Markets (country/region and language selectors) and switches to right-to-left automatically for languages that need it. See Languages and currencies.

The theme's principles

Understanding a few principles saves a lot of questions: they explain why some settings exist and why others don't.

A few axes, everything else follows

Maison has few global settings, but each one is a real choice: heading and body fonts, letter case, reading size, heading scale, page width and margin, density, grid gutter, control size and shape, field and option styles, icon weight, and color schemes. Everything else — heading sizes, spacing, hover colors, field borders — is calculated from those settings. That's what guarantees no combination produces an inconsistent page.

Three starting styles

The theme comes with three complete styles — Maison, Couture, and Riviera — so you can start from a consistent brand voice instead of assembling settings one by one. See Theme styles.

A fixed button hierarchy

There are three button styles, and each signals a level of commitment: solid for the main action (add to cart, checkout), outlined for a genuine alternative, underlined for a low-key next step. No global setting changes this hierarchy, so a buy button always stays recognizable.

Everything works without JavaScript

Every journey — navigation, filters, choosing a variant, adding to cart — has a server-side path. Enhancements (drawers, loading without a page refresh) are layered on top and never become the only way through.

Accessible by design

The theme targets WCAG 2.2 AA: a visible focus on every control, keyboard navigation in drawers and filters, contrast checked in every bundled scheme, and touch targets of at least 24 × 24px. See Accessibility.

Who Maison is for

Maison suits brands that sell a short, carefully chosen range and care about photography. It is not a multipurpose theme: it doesn't offer a pixel-by-pixel page builder, or colors, borders, or corner radii per element. If you sell thousands of very different SKUs, a catalog-oriented theme will serve you better.
